The break I've taken from blogging these past few days was not something I planned. Neither was the semi-withdrawal from the internet that I practiced over the last week. And disconnecting the television? That was an absolute spur of the moment decision my husband and I made three days ago and which somehow, seemed to fit in perfectly with the progression of our electronic abandonment. Why? Can't say really except, that I've now coined a word for the phenomenon that is a blatant rip-off of the staycation everyone seems to be talking about these days. I had a disconnectication. That's right, a vacation from my connected life.

And now? I'm back. It was great while it lasted though. During the respite I worked a bit on my suntan, cooked a little more, played with my child for longer stretches of time, puttered around the house, read a couple of books and cuddled more with the two men in my life. This last had me thinking how enjoyable it is to do nothing but just hold on tightly to what matters most in this world. A jumble of crossed legs and arms with pointy little elbows and knobby little knees in between, spells happiness in my book. I can't imagine why I haven't been making as much time for it as I should.

Today is a day for catching up. My little one is in summer school and I've got some time before I need to go and pick him up. The husband is back at work and now I've come back to the blog. In the future, I've decided that once a week I will shut it all down. No e-mail, no computers, no television. A little disconnectication once in a while does wonders for the spirit. I recommend it highly.

  1. I should try this. My kids might have an opinion or two about it, but I'm certain they would survive. Would I? All right, yes. And I'm thinking now of all the household projects I could get done.

  2. This is something we used to do years ago when the kids were younger. Now that they are older I think this would be great to start up again. But ya, my kids would definitely protest such an idea.

  3. Perhaps once I feel more connected to what is happening on this planet - that is, feel less disconnected - I'll feel more confident about letting myself go for long stretches without connecting electronically. No, you know what. I'll take you lead and do just that. Soon. Thanks for the prompt.

  4. Milena, great minds think alike! I found myself un-intentionally walking away from my blog for the past week...it wasn't a conscious decision...just one day lead to another and then a whole lot of time passed.

Frankly, I think a vacation from electronics, computers, tvs, even cell phones, is a healthy reminder of what's literally near and dear.

I think this is a practice we could health-ily make a habit of.

  6. What a great idea. I did this a few months back for the whole weekend...it was really tough the first day...but got easier.

I think I may have to do it again soon. We should sign up for a club! ;) TOYC..."Turn off your computer' day!

  7. Nice idea. I'm going to think about this (which day to pick)...maybe I should pick tomorrow, as I have a class to focus on. Better yet, I'll wait till Hubby returns from a business trip (he'd never believe it, otherwise, haha)

  9. Wow. What a great idea. I'm impressed you did it. It's hard to disconnect. But it sounds like you connected with what really matters.

  11. Oh, I know the feeling. There have been a few days or weekends when I just had to unplug everything so I could recharge my own batteries. Feels good, doesn't it?

  13. Agreed - disconnect is good. We do it on a lot of the major holidays (except Christmas, too hard with new toys!).
It's amazing how technical life has become...we a cell phone only family, so that's a tough one...and does the Ipod count?

  15. I think everyone needs to disconnect once in a while, it really makes you appreciate the other things in your life that were there but we didn't stop to notice.
