It isn't pleasant to have my bluff as thoroughly called. My idle claim of being a translucent-skinned neurasthenic who cares nothing for sunlight is incontrovertibly shattered after a mere ten minutes of ambling through the duty-free shop at Keflavík airport in Iceland at ten in the morning. The November sky outside is still as dark as four a.m., precisely the time it would be for me if I were still back in New York. But I am not back in New York and should, by all rights, be enjoying that cognitive dissonance that is the happy dividend of transatlantic air travel: the European day, brightly risen and well under way six hours before its time. I find myself existentially, spirit-robbingly sad as I look over the shelves of vacuum-packed salmon, tinned smoked puffin, lumpfish caviar, and licorice, waiting for a ride in Reykjavík. By the time I have been in Iceland for an hour I am a walking Edvard Munch lithograph. All is blackness in my heart as well as outside the windows of the bus during the hour-long trip into town. The vehicle fishtails wildly, buffeted by inhospitable winds. When I get back to New York, I think to myself, I shall never again denigrate the light. I will start a letter-writing campaign to institute National Photosynthesis Day. I will join a tanning salon.

- Firelight (1998) Romantic Period English melodrama. Which I suppose makes it just my cup of tea.
- RocknRolla (2008). I loved it. But then, I like almost everything that Guy Ritchie directs.
- Bottle Shock (2008) The rise and superstardom of California wines. It was Ok. The historical part of the movie was what made it interesting for the most part.

This reminds me actually of the famous incident (which may or may not have ever happened) when Raquel Welch walked sat down with Johnny on the Tonight Show with a cat in her lap and proceeded to say "would you like to pet my pussy?" to which Johnny responded "I'd love to, if you'd just get rid of the damn cat." This story (but no film) has been in circulation for years, and, some time before Johnny retired, Jane Fonda was on the show and asked him if it really happened. He said no, but the way he pretended never to have heard the story before made me suspicious, since it was so well known.

Carson's Copper Clapper bit reminded me of Steven Wright explaining why he is so deadpan: "I'm working hard to remember my bits," Wright said. How not to laugh when delivering such material? Just try not to screw it up.

I fell for him hook, line and sinker the first time I ever heard him 'sing', hum and chest tap Vivaldi's concerto for two mandolins. I'll have to find a video of that and post it.
